The silence woke her. She saw this scribbled across the walls of what seemed to be a normal room, but was actually something she would never be able to imagine.
And in the morning mists
When the movie twists
You will watch your life
Leave with nothing but a wish
Amaira stood there. Who was this person writing over the walls and predicting her life? However, the biggest question in her mind was, why was she suddenly 21 years old? The last time Amaira checked she was a simple 14 year old at her school and here she is now in what looks like the room in a mental asylum and in the body of a 21 year old. She looked around her surroundings and only saw 3 doors.
That's when a robotic voice spoke,” Welcome! And thank you for choosing our service. Which door would you like today ma'am? We have three doors here, each containing one wish you made during your life on earth, but the wishes will not be disclosed nor will the door colors. Good Guessing!”
Amaira was appalled. She never thought that this would be a decision she would ever have to make in her life. Her mind was terribly conflicted and she did not know what to do, her wishes were not always well wishing for everyone around her and no one even told which of the three wishes were behind the doors.
The green seemed like the safest option, but the fact that it was labeled ‘3’ was not sitting right with her. She knew, from her extensive knowledge from books and movies, that the second option was never the right choice. So her only remaining choice was the orange one. She says “I choose door 1”
“Great choice”
As she walked through the door, she wondered what wish it could be. Could it be her wish to be a millionaire? Or would she finally be able to step out of her siblings’ shadow? She pondered on this as she walked until she stopped. She hadn't bothered to look around. All around her were visions, like screenshots of her past, and there seemed to be a recurring context. Her father punished her when she got bad grades, her mom being constantly dissatisfied and disappointed in everything she did, her peers making fun of her because of her haircut, her makeup, her clothes, anything, but when the blur cleared away she saw her most ordinary day in college. And suddenly she wasn't seeing it anymore, she was in it.
Amaira went about her whole day, jumping from class to class, scrambling to get her homework done. But what she failed to realize was the outcome of this vision. She was so confused about the whole thing that she almost forgot about the doors. She didn't even know how she knew all this, where her classes were, what assignments were due, the names of all these people. It was like the information just materialized in her brain and she was instinctively using it. Approaching the end of her school day, she felt a little spark inside of her. Normally, that would be good, but not today. Today's spark was more like a grim determination, the kind you feel when you know you're making a mistake but it's only because it is the lesser of two evils. She could feel it bubbling inside her, filling her up so far it felt like she would overflow. It was energy, it was purpose, it was pure willpower. She didn't know where it was coming from but she knew that nothing good could come from it.
As she walked back to her dorm, she stopped on the sidewalk. She stood, watching the cars drive past on the road. Men and women, in a hurry to get home. Mothers and fathers and husbands and wives rushing to get to their loved ones. She felt a sudden realization that all these people had a life as complex and enthralling as hers. And all in a flash, she knew the wish she had chosen. She walked purposefully across the sidewalk and taking no time to look side to side, she walked into the incoming traffic and her wish was fulfilled. She was dead. That's when a robotic voice spoke,” Welcome! And thank you for choosing our service. Which door would you like today ma'am? We have three doors here, each containing one wish you made during your life on earth, different from the last time you played but the wishes will not be disclosed nor will the door colors. Good Guessing!”
