Are You a Patriot?

Freedom. What does the word freedom mean? Have you ever pondered upon what the actual relevance freedom has in our lives today? With progressing times, it is extremely sorrowful and afflicting to witness that we, Indians are digressing from our duty of honouring our country and celebrating our beloved “Aazaadi ka amrut mahotsav”. Have we forgotten the STRUGGLES, the SACRIFICES, the MOVEMENTS, the MARCHES, the FASTS, and the LONG IMPRISONMENTS of our great freedom fighters who FOUGHT for FREEDOM, for the FUTURE, for INDIA? Mahatma Gandhi, Subash Chandra Bose, Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, Lokmanya Tilak, Sarojini Naidu, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and hundreds and thousands of other names, lost in the pages of history, fought, many till death, to achieve this freedom. However, in the 21st century, these golden names hardly shine in the hooded eyes of Indians.

Has patriotism died in the hearts of the people of such a nation whose golden history is an epitome of sacrifices and hardships, of tragic beginnings and glorious ends, of leadership and courage, of valour and true nationalism? The Tiranga, the national flag of India, is an emblem of pride and glory, occupying a position of honour in the hearts of every Indian. But are we protecting its pride and glory? NO. People throw the Indian flag on the streets and in the dustbin after celebrating Republic Day and Independence Day. Does our flag hold value for only two days? The National Anthem, another emblem of Indian pride, is taken with utmost casualty by most people forgetting its essence and pride. The Red Fort, a historic structure and a great national treasure, was atrociously vandalized by enraged farmers on 26th January, 2021 where they breached the gates of the historically acclaimed monument and removed the National Flag, only to make the government hear their plight and fulfil their demands. Is this what the definition of patriotism has evolved to?

However, even with all these incidents, there still shines a star of hope for the Indian’s night is soon to become day, it’s plight is soon to fade away. As Indians of the 21st century, the time has come to shape the way to the future. It is now time to consider whether we want patriotism to even exist in the future. Respecting our flag, our national anthem and all the other emblems of India is a simple and effortless way of valuing the freedom struggles of India, and instilling in ourselves a sense of nationalism. Aren’t you proud to be an Indian?
