Picking up the paintbrush, staring at a blank canvas for hours, figuring out what fits is the hardest thing I’ve faced as an artist. Looking at fresh starts is always hard. Some may see it as an opportunity to try something new, while some find it terrifying to be unaware of what’s ahead.
While filling a canvas in a way that I can show myself to the world is hard, is equally rewarding. Choosing the right paints, the proper colour scheme, the perfect theme and the perfect picture does not exist. There is nothing like a perfect picture but a perfect feeling which comes from embracing the imperfections. Learning that colouring outside the lines doesn’t make you a bad artist; it makes you unique, and it has helped me grow.
No matter how many paintings you make, or how many times you throw the sheet away, it’s a part of you. Every painting you make and every picture you draw is your identity as an artist. Never let go of your canvas because it’s who you are! There will be many who will come and try to strip you of your right to your canvas, but you are the artist of your life! I always find it essential to step back once in a while and see the bigger picture, for what it really is. Sometimes when we feel like nothing is going right for us, a painting has helped me realise that there is always a bigger picture to look at. So while we may not like one part of the painting, the canvas will always be incomplete without it. Similarly, even if we do not like something in our life, it is important because it helps us understand ourselves better. It completes us.
There will always be a bigger part of our canvas to fill with things that make us who we are. Humans are also a piece of art and I have learnt that sculpting my life means that I am perfectly incomplete and that I am still working on my masterpiece.
