How can Plants Grow without Soil??

Have you ever seen plants growing without soil? Soil provides the plants with the necessary nutrients for its growth and acts as a reservoir of water for plants. But, imagine if a few years later you open your eyes to see plants and trees growing without any soil!! I am not kidding. Yes! It is very much possible..

Hydroponics is a new emerging method of gardening plants of your choice using just WATER . The word HYDROPONICS is derived from the Latin words “hydro” meaning water and “ponos” meaning labour. Etymology wise, it is the science of planting and growing plants in a nutrient enriched environment without soil. In fact, the process is so simple that just by setting up the hydroponics system, you can enhance your passion for gardening in a lesser area and resource. Some interesting facts about hydroponics are as follows:

1. The hydroponics method requires only 3 ingredients! : Only water, oxygen and nutrition in the form of a liquid is all you need for the proper growth of plants .

2. The plant growth is faster : Compared to other methods involving soil, the hydroponics system gives faster results by 30 - 60 % . This is because nutrients are directly delivered to the plant in this system.

3. Say goodbye to weeds: When you grow plants in soil, weed is a constant problem for gardeners. The hydroponics system is devoid of weed removal. Only providing proper nutrition for plants is required.

4. Harvest your favourite fruits and vegetables all year around: Due to certain limitations like soil, season, many plants cannot be grown throughout the year. Hydroponics is the solution. Wouldn’t it be exciting to eat mangoes in whichever season you want!!

5. Healthier and More Viable Plants : While growing plants in soil, you have to worry about pests and other insects. However, there is no need to worry about pesticides and fungicides. Due to this, the plants are healthier as compared to others.

Hydroponics is a really great and innovative idea of farming. With evolving climatic conditions and Global Warming, it might just be the solution to greater produce and the next step of the Green Revolution for humans.
