The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and is managed by the Commonwealth Games Federation, based in London, England. Australian-born Astley Cooper first broached the idea of such games in 1891, calling for sports competitions to be held to demonstrate the unity of the British Empire. This year, the 2022 Commonwealth Games were held from 28th July to 8th August in Birmingham, England.
India has won a total of 564 medals at the Commonwealth Games since it made its debut in 1934, with Jaspal Rana adorned with 15 medals, being the most successful Indian to win so far. Some of the best sportsmen and women to have participated in the Commonwealth Games from India include Milkha Singh (Athletics), Lila Ram (Wrestling), Raghavan Chandrasekaran (Wrestling), Manika Batra (Table Tennis) and Amia Ghia (Badminton). Did you know that India had won one medal at its debut Commonwealth Games? 88 years later, at The Birmingham Commonwealth Games, India has performed exceptionally, winning twenty-two gold medals, sixteen silver medals, and twenty-three bronze medals. Indian athletes performed outstanding this time due to which India was able to attain the 4th position worldwide by the number of medals that it received. A valiant effort that bore fruitful results was put up by Indian athletes, especially Amit Phangal, Nitu Ghanghas, P.V.Sindhu, and Bhavina Patel, this year.
India returned home with 12 medals in wrestling and 6 medals in badminton itself with Indian badminton players winning innumerable hearts of spectators in attendance and digital viewers across the globe. P.V. Sindhu was exquisite and won her first-ever Commonwealth Games gold, after winning a bronze and a silver in the earlier two attempts. Despite sustaining a stress fracture in the quarter-finals, the two-time Olympic medallist powered her way to winning gold. Lakshya Sen, another badminton star, was mesmerizing in his performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He won a maiden gold medal in the men’s singles category by beating Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong in an epic final. He also won a silver medal in the mixed team category where India lost in the final to Malaysia.
Thus, the performance of the Indians was extremely praiseworthy and it has made us proud! We hope that, in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, India will bag more medals and will attain its highest rank yet! With the emerging infrastructure and increase in the number of sports training facilities, it is highly probable that in the next four to eight years, India will attain many more noteworthy athletes who will make our country proud.
Jai Hind!
A moment of pride for India
