India’s Forgotten Freedom Fighters

Remember Their Sacrifices, Remember Their Lives.

Gandhiji's insight, a gentle light,

Bose's spirit, daring and bold,

Nehru's vision, a brilliant sight…

Among the well-known, the hidden stand,

Salient Heroes, a rebel band,

Their hands were the ones that shaped our Motherland.

A symbol of light in times so dark,

On the pages of our history, they made their mark.

For our nation, they are sacrificers,

In the fires of our hearts, they are the igniters,

I salute each one of these freedom fighters.

Udham Singh's assassination of Sir Michael O'Dwyer, driven by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, was a powerful symbol of resistance against British oppression. His courageous act ignited a fire in the Indian independence movement, raising awareness about the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy as well as the injustices suffered by the Indian people. Singh's heroism and sacrifice continue to inspire and remind us of the fight for justice and liberation during that crucial era in India's history.

Despite being in her 70s, Matangini Hazra was a courageous freedom fighter. She led the protests against salt tax and forest laws implemented by the British, and actively participated in Gandhi's nonviolent movements. Her speeches were an inspiration to Indians everywhere. She marched in the Quit India Movement, holding the tricolour, and continued walking with resolve until her last breath.

Kanaklata Barua was a young unwavering freedom fighter who led the ‘Tezpatriya Lajya’ movement in Assam. Despite being only 17 at the time, she marched with the Indian National flag held high and hoisted it at the local police station. Despite hearing warnings about the dire consequences of doing so, she continued, facing police resistance with a brave face. Her leadership sheds light on the role of women during the Indian freedom struggle and continues to inspire women today.

The Munda Rebellion is one of the most noteworthy tribal revolts in the history of Indian Independence. Headed by Birsa Munda, the Indian tribes fought against the British policies which were harming tribal communities. He put forth the voice for the voiceless and oppressed, further uniting our nation. Munda remains to be an inspiration even today for tribal communities in India, and he is rightfully held as a hero for the people of the Munda community.

The freedom fighters who fought for our country's independence shared strong visions, daring insights, and unmatched bravery. Their sacrifices are deeply ingrained in our history.

This Independence Day, let us remember the hundreds of anonymous fighters who died protesting and sacrificed their lives on the battlefield. We should celebrate the journey, sacrifices, and steps taken by these freedom fighters to achieve our glorious nation's freedom and independence.
