Elephants are the largest mammals on land. They are beautiful and majestic creatures. In some parts of Southern India, elephants are revered and considered alike to the elephant god, Ganesha. They are caring and gentle animals despite their intimidating appearance. Fun Fact : their trunk has the strength to lift heavy logs of wood, while also having the ability to be as delicate as the instrument used to fix a lady’s watch. Unfortunately, even in today's world, such wonderful animals are harmed for futile purposes This article is about the sad and gory truth of the atrocities they have to face.
Around the world, thousands of elephants are abused for the entertainment of tourists. A wild elephant can't be subdued. Hence, caged elephants have to be in physical and psychological pain to make them feasible enough to perform, ride and be used for other tourist interactions.
The hunters or controllers get these animals to perform like this by torturing them. They catch young elephants from their mothers as they can only be trained when young. When the adult elephants refuse to give their babies, they are killed. Since the whole herd chases the hunters to rescue the calf, they are all also murdered. African elephants are key species in Asia but due to illegal poaching, their population is decreasing.
During a zoo performance, an elephant is coerced to do tricks by its trainer, who uses a bullhook to instil fear into the animal. The trainer rides atop the elephant, pulling on its ears to signal when it’s time to dive underwater for its next trick.
Poaching of elephants is a large threat to not only elephants but other wild animals. Maintaining the Earth’s biodiversity is critical. To achieve this, we must stop animal cruelty.
We cannot force animals to perform for us and entertain us. I am deeply saddened by the fate of these animals and therefore are aiming to spread awareness on helping them. Save the elephants and let's aim for a world where elephants can live in their natural habitat in peace.
