“The pen is mightier than the sword”, is a saying we have all heard often. The language we use can have a great influence on our lives, bringing us to great heights or leading to our destruction. They affect our emotions and the way we perceive life.
The words we may use in the heat of the moment, may not seem harsh or cruel at that moment, but we inflict unseen wounds on the person we address them to. Although they’re just words, the wounds created by them cannot be fixed by a simple “sorry”.
As a matter of fact, the words we use can be comprehended differently by each individual. Think about how many times, your text messages have been interpreted in a manner that they weren’t supposed to be. Our sarcasm or jokes are frequently taken seriously leading to several awkward situations.
We must remain conscious of what we speak and which words we select. More often than not, we use words that are complicated without understanding their meaning, simply to seem sophisticated. Like, when people use the words “patriarchal” or “woke” despite not knowing their meaning, only to appear knowledgeable. How often have you noticed this too?
Words are medicine and a toxin. It is not new to us what these subtle forms of communication can actually do. Could be an inspirational pep talk or a flaming roast, they always have a deep impact on our minds. We can never alter what a person might say to us, but we can definitely filter out the hurtful statements. Our words and linguistic ability determine a multitude of things such as the way we are perceived by others and the articulation of our feelings, emotions and passions.
