The year 2020 was somewhat a chaotic year that taught us valuable life lessons in many different manners. We learnt that we should always be optimistic no matter what as there is always hope and that if one door in our life gets shut we should walk ahead to find another one that has opened.
Although the year began with a massive forest fire in the Amazon rainforest that destroyed almost 19 million acres of land, next in line we had an outbreak of the COVID-19 virus throughout the world, urging the need to initiate a worldwide lockdown. In such a way the world was shut down in a span of a few minutes. Cases of this unknown virus were on the rise, people had been losing their jobs, countless citizens had been separated from their families and the saddest part of it all, millions of people throughout the world had been attacked by this disease and had lost their lives in this battle against COVID-19.
It is rightly said that through every war emerges a hero to save the world. In this case, we had thousands of people in our country that stood up and tried their best to save their motherland. The biggest heroes who emerged through the pandemic were the doctors, nurses and ambulance staff who worked through an uncountable number of sleepless nights to treat their patients and find a cure at the same time.
There is one such fighter who has been saving lives throughout the pandemic, his name is Santosh Pandey. He is an ambulance driver who drives an advanced life support system ambulance in the Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh. He had been driving his ambulance throughout the city, rescuing citizens and saving their lives throughout the pandemic. Due to the insurgence of the second wave, he had not been able to meet his family members for over two months and had stated that he didn't know whether he would be able to see his family again if he got infected with the virus as there would be no one to take him to the hospital. He had encountered hostile behaviour from the attendants of patients and hospital authorities countless times. Many a time he had to wait along with the patients outside the hospital for hours and would get scolded by the attendants but he would overlook that with a smile on his face as he knew about the stress they were going through.
Such were the ways of Santosh Pandey who not only rescued civilians and saved their lives but also never gave up even though he would be scolded for the tiniest of reasons. He was driven by the love of his family and the hope that he would get to see them soon one day. I am sure that there are many such unsung heroes throughout the country who continue to inspire people to never give up. I too am inspired by the ways of Santosh Pandey and make myself a promise to work hard and do my best to make the world a better place to live in.
