Summer Pleasures

CHERRY AND CHOCOLATE MADE EVERYTHING BETTER, is the first thought which crossed Jihwa’s mind as she hit the bed. Summer was something she always looked forward to , a season which had always provided her memorable moments and lifelong lessons.

This summer was the last before she headed to Seoul National university. Due to this reason , she had decided to make this one special by creating a bucket list of all the things she was unable to complete in the past, now getting the opportunity to do so. Success was fortunately with her and she was able to complete all of them, from reaching her reading goal - a very lengthy one which gave the milky way a competition, to touring through three of the seven wonders in the world, which was a wonder in itself. From standing on the highest floor of Burj Khalifa in Dubai to para-gliding through the beautiful sceneries of Switzerland, she soaked up the beauty of the cultural places throughout her adventure and would never forget the kindness and genuinity the residents of the countries had shown her. This journey had forever marked a special place in her heart.

The bustling noises of the people in the complex brought her back to the present night, a small but efficient room in the centre of Sydney as she prepared to head back home tomorrow, the last destination in her bucket list. The outline of the Sydney Opera House could be seen from her tiny window with all of its glory and glamour. As her eyes diverted, they found the very prominent midnight sky glaring at her with its intensity, making its presence known in her eyes and for a second she wondered if time had stilled itself, the cold breeze creeping on her enveloped into a hug as she shuddered her thoughts away from the window.

One thought stuck with her though,”The end of hardships comes happiness”, a good old Korean proverb her mother used to constantly say, and how true it was. After all the blood, sweat and tears she put in during the last years of school to secure a future of her own which cost her losing out on so much, having this vacation was pure happiness. The loneliness engulfed her once again as she went into a deep train of dreams. Dreams about the “what ifs” her future held for her and the sweet memories the summer had shared, only with her, like a secret only she and the season knew, one she would keep close to her forever. The clock silently ticked lulling Jihwa into a deep sleep, where a new chapter of her story awaited her the next day.
