The Cost of Power

Our nation is a home to millions of people, the diversity of India is considered to be the most expansive in the nation. The food, traditions, clothing, history of India are so varied that it takes many a lifetime to get a comprehensive view. Having various backgrounds, we tend to have different mindsets. Every citizen of India has a different idea of the right action in every situation. Together we hold up the integrity of a great nation.

Roshan grew up in a modest household in a small town in India, he did not have the means to afford the luxuries of life, however he was content with what he had. Every day, Roshan traversed 10 kilometers to get to his school, his legs were tired and his shoes were tattered. Roshan decided when he grew up that he would ensure that children in this village had the availability of a bus service when they were of schooling age. He decided to form a party of people who agreed with his ideology. They endorsed his ideas and his popularity increased among the people of the village. Over time, his ideas changed, the power got to him and he would not listen to anyone, he was a prominent figure in the village who in the face of his operation was doing good for the people of the village but in the dark conducted activities for his benefit. One day, his party encountered another group of people who did not agree, they said that it was not necessary at the cost of everyone in the village, the students that felt the need for motorized transport could avail it through their own money. A fight broke out and people were injured. He reluctantly decided to use his popularity to silence the people in the town. This was the first of many misuses of power in his career, he swallowed his conscience and looked the other way.

These situations occur everyday in India, their consequences may be for the good of people or might go against their situation. However, there is one thing in common with all, they are executed by the people in power to force their ideas into action. These actions are conducted by people not only in political power but those who hold any post in which they are alloted power. It is important to keep in mind that not everyone is hungry for power, superficially. There are those that actually want to flood change in our system, visionaries who dream of a clean India, free of misusers and evil. It is important to rethink twice, thrice and even ten times before electing a person and keep them in check, for who knows deep down they might be someone else. ‘
