THE ENIGMATIC EPISTLE

His hands were clammy as they gripped his hair from fear, his heart beating faster than ever. He could not believe what had happened. His life had changed forever. Was there a way to reverse this?

Magnus grew up in a small apartment in Eastern Oslo. Life being of moderate means, Magnus never really had materialistic desires. He adored sharing moments with close friends and family and understood what was truly precious. A trait only a person of a high magnitude of rationalistic mentality could possess at that age. That day began normally, Magnus was not keen on going to school, pertaining to the test planned ahead that day. Later, he found out that he had managed to score a considerable above average grade even though he was unprepared. Returning home in a somewhat happy state, Magnus lay in bed, thinking about how he had teleported through time last night while watching the latest episode of Shin Chan (It was popular). His chain of thoughts was broken by the sound of the doorbell.

Magnus ran barefoot through his house to open the doorbell, curious to see who it was. He opened the door to a man from Posten, the postal service of Oslo. He was clad in a red and black coloured hoodie with a beanie on his head. “Hello little boy, are your parents home?” He asked with a deep rumble to his voice. “No”, replied a weary Magnus. “Looks like you have a delivery for Mr. Magnus Olsen, please deliver this to him.” Handing the letter, the posten man walked away. Magnus, closing the door behind him, ripped open the letter to see who wanted to talk to him specifically. The letter read, “Dear Me, It’s me, you.”, and continued on. Magnus was perplexed and surprised at the attempt to humor him but even if this was a prank it knew details Magnus only shared with his parents. The letter read, “Don’t believe me? Look at the pair of socks you currently have on, they are grey with red and blue stripes, aren’t they? Yesterday, you couldn’t prepare for your test because you were watching Shin Chan. Your parents didn’t ask you to study because they were out on a trip outside Oslo and are returning tonight. You are currently living with a nanny whose name is Elizabeth, but you call her Lizzy for short.” Magnus was dumbfounded, he slowly walked up to a sofa and sat down. He rubbed his eyes to see if he was just seeing things but no, there was no change in what was written. He pinched his arm to wake himself up from this terrible vision of a dream, but the attempt was in vain. The letter was very much real. He heard the doorbell ring again.

This time he did not run up to the door and walked up slowly as if he thought it would delay the inevitable. It was Lizzy, Magnus grabbed onto her arms , holding groceries and pulled her into the living room. He held the letter in front of her so that her eyes could absorb its contents, Lizzy read through the letter. Her confused smile turned upside down. Dropping the bag of groceries, Lizzy sprinted for the landline, she immediately dialled for Magnus’s parents. Cupping the receiving end of the handset, she whispered, “Leave the letter and go to your room.” Magnus obeyed, shutting his room's door behind him. He wondered what else was written in that letter aside from the creepy details. A few hours later, Magnus peeked through an ajar door to notice two gentlemen in police uniform standing outside. They were showing Magnus’ parents some funny figures on the letter. Oh, that’s right! He had learnt about them in school! They were called fingerprints. Magnus had learnt that each fingerprint was unique. He listened into the conversation, one of the policemen said, “Sir, we were only able to trace one type of fingerprint onto the letter and that is your sons. There are no other fingerprints on the letter. Since Elizabeth did not touch the piece of paper, she could not have created fingerprints on the paper.” Dad and Mom looked taken aback. He asked, “Then how do we find the perpetrator?” The policemen didn’t have an answer. The other officer said, “Sir, we do not know that yet, however, we did find something peculiar, the letter’s originating address has been stated to this house and we cross checked the handwriting with Magnus’s handwriting and the letter m matched. Magnus was startled. He could not believe that they were suspecting him of something he didn’t do. His head started to ache, black patches started to form in his vision. He blacked out.

Magnus opened the door so hard that it crashed against the wall and made a noticeable amount of sound. He looked at the five people in the hall and grinned at their confused and worried faces. “Finally I’m free!”, he said and dashed towards the policeman, but Magnus, due to his physical size, would not last long in the attack. He was tackled to the ground and the two officers held him secure to the ground. The cop took out a pair of handcuffs and placed them onto Magnus. His parents were astounded and couldn’t understand why Magnus tried to attack him. He was caught. Well not exactly. “I’ve seen this before.” The policeman said. He picked up the letter and pointed to the part, where it said, “Set me free or else I shall send information out that you will not want to be public.” He explained that Magnus was suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder and had unknowingly harboured an enemy identity. He must have been inside this identity when he wrote that letter and must have not known because to him, he was sleeping. The identity was subconsciously present inside his mind storing up data such as the colour of his socks and the people that surrounded him. Magnus had fallen unconscious when he was pinned to the ground. He woke up surprised to be in cuffs, he did not remember anything after the other identity had taken over. He was let go and hugged his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Olsen decided to seek therapy for Magnus and remove him from school before he fell into a deeper state of this disorder. They decided it was better for Magnus if they told him about what had happened later. Magnus’s head was still paining from the black out. The policemen were leaving to file a report on the events that occurred. Magnus waved to them and said “I’m sorry I attacked you officer.”
