THE NEW TEMPLE OF DEMOCRACY

The Central Vista is a 3.2-kilometer stretch in New Delhi that houses important buildings of the Indian Democracy such as the Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the National Archives, among others. The Central Vista Redevelopment Project aims to revamp the original Central Vista to improve the productivity and efficiency of the administration by providing it with highly functional office infrastructure. Its estimated cost is 20,000 crores and it is expected to be completed between 2024 and 2026.

The guiding principles of the revamp project are:

  • The Central Vista was originally designed with strong geometry, splendid symmetry, and a careful transportation route. The Master Plan aims to restore the original symmetry while respecting the heritage of the building.

  • Strengthening the functioning of the Legislature by constructing a new state-of-art Parliament that meets all the needs of all the ministries.

  • Improving the productivity of administration by constructing a planned Common Central Secretariat that will include a Central Conference Centre and all the 51 Ministries. Combining all the Ministries will allow easy movement of documents and security; increasing productivity. The increase in office spaces will create modern workspaces with the latest technology. The facilities and amenities will be on par with global standards.

  • Conserving and rejuvenation heritage and cultural facilities. The North and South Blocks will be refurbished to house a National Museum. The North block will hold the concept of ‘India until 1857’ and the South Block will hold ‘India since 1857’

  • Providing adequate space and infrastructure for executive offices. A modern, secure, and completely equipped Executive Enclave is planned to house the executive offices of the Prime Minister, Cabinet Secretariat, and National Security Council Secretariat.

  • Ensuring environmental sustainability and extending public space. The project strives towards sustainable development and clean transportation. Public spaces shall be improved and more areas of importance will be accessible to the citizens. The project will result in an overall increase in green cover in the entire area. No trees will be cut down but instead relocated, and 10 new saplings will be planted for every tree that is relocated.
