The Science Behind the Indian Flag

The Indian national flag is called the Tiranga means tricolor. It was adopted on July 22, 1947, by the constituent assembly. Originally made from khadi it illustrated the symbol of freedom and nationalism sporting three equal horizontal bands. It shows India’s deep rich Vedic heritage with three colors and a chakra in the center. It consists of three colors: saffron on the top, white in the middle, and green on the bottom. The Ashoka chakra in the middle is navy blue with 24 strips.

The saffron color similar to orange is on the top the symbolizes enthusiasm, wealth, and vigor. According to science, orange represents enthusiasm and shelter (to evade grief dominating minds). This tells us a lot about why it was chosen and according to mythology all gods in India usually wore such saffron clothes. Additionally, it is the color of the sun and the radiant blooming flowers.

The white color in the middle of the flag symbolizes truthfulness and knowledge. According to psychology, the color white symbolizes purity and organization. In Indian mythology, the whole universe was actually an ocean of milk so it represents completeness. Milk is a complete food representing pure Satva. The swan is the vehicle of the Creator God Brahma which is white.

The color green on the bottom indicates safety and security. According to science green implies growth, new beginnings, rebirth, and revival. Green plants give us vital oxygen to the atmosphere which is a life-giver. The green represents money, fertility, and stability. It is shown as the foundation of the flag and the country.

The central chakra is in the middle white section. Blue illustrates tranquility and a sign of stability according to science. The navy blue chakra has 24 spokes which represent the 24 rishis of the Himalayas with Vishvamitra as the first and Yajnavalkta as the last. The 24 spokes also represent the 24 hours of the day and are symbolic of the time also giving the name Samay Chakra. The pre-independence day version had the charkha and the Chakra is also a simplified version of the chakra. It symbolizes there is dynamism and movement in life.

The flag is an amalgamation of symbolism, psychology, and mythology. It shows the deeper meaning of the flag and how all the colors fit in together perfectly. The Indian flag represents our freedom , national pride, and history.
