I think, in current times, listening to songs is a part of each and every one of our lives.
Whether it be listening to it on your Spotify for hours on end, or just hearing the odd song your neighbour has on late at night. This music has some role to play in our lives.
For me, it is the former. Listening to music is such an enormous part of my life that it would be difficult to imagine without it. Whether it is while I study, or while I come home from school, the speaker is always on , and so are the songs!
At first, I wasn’t such an ardent fan and I wasn’t much of a frequent listener. The most I knew about or listened to was the old Dev Anand songs my mother used to play at home.
No, my love for listening to songs started during the lockdown. Ironic, how, during arguably what should have been one of the most uninspiring , drab and boring periods of our lives, we all seemed to find so much creativity and inspiration. It was in this lockdown, that the loneliness finally got to me, and I started listening to music on my Ipad.
First, it was for a few minutes every week, then as online school started , It increased and soon it was like I started taking refuge in the songs and the music I listened to. Since then, it has become a humongous part of my life. But why? What makes this music so powerful?
You see, songs are not only a bunch of words strung together and then put to tune.
They mean much much more. They are a form of inspiration. Yes, music holds the power to inspire people. A few simple lyrics hold so much power in them. Songs aren't just songs, but they hold messages in them. These few simple words can inspire thousands of people to keep trying , to keep moving forward, and most importantly to never give up.
I believe that music is powerful because it makes us happy. It gives so many of us in darkness a chance to see the light. Simply listening to Taylor Swift songs can cure my anxiety, make me calmer and fill me with joy.
In fact , it is not only happiness .Songs are also powerful because they make us feel so many different emotions. Whether it be sorrow, remorse, guilt, jealousy, joy, anger, heartbreak, it is through music that we are able to express ourselves and feel these emotions.Every time I hear a song, I feel something. Different songs make us feel these different things. For example, listening to Adele makes me feel sad, while Shakira makes me feel determined and 80s and 90s English jazz makes me feel happy.
In the end, I would like to say that the most powerful part of music is the power it gives us. Unlike so many things in our life that are decided and influenced by others, The songs we listen to aren't controlled. This makes us free in a way. WE can choose what we want to feel, or what song we want to express ourselves through. Music gives us the freedom and power of finding out who we are.
So, the decision is yours! See what makes YOU happy, and go ahead and find the music that makes you YOU
