The Undertaking

Johnathan barely managed to stay awake behind the wheel while driving past the miles of silent grasslands. It was 2 a.m., normally at this time, he would have been comfortably fast asleep in his bed by now. However today, he had a letter to deliver, a mission he could not fail.

As time passed, his head drooped further and further onto the steering wheel. He could barely keep his eyes open. Tim nearly jumped up on his seat when he heard the loud honk. A behemoth of a truck with great speed was headed his way, he hadn't realized that he had drifted onto the wrong lane. His life flashed before his eyes as he swerved the steering wheel with all the energy left in him. He managed to escape the truck, with seconds to spare. This was not the end of his problems, the car fell into the trench and spun out of control. Jonathan opened his eyes to find himself in a hospital bed. Bright lights, chatter and the overpowering pressure were getting to him. There was a knock on the door. A nurse walked in holding a pad, “Good Evening Mr. Walkers, how are you feeling? ”, she asked. “Apart from the splitting headache and the bright lights, I am better than I was”. “ You suffered through a mild intracranial hemorrhage, we found you unconscious inside your capsized vehicle. Besides your apparel we also found this.”, she said, taking out a letter from her pocket. Jonathan grabbed the letter from her hand and asked, “What time is it?”. “It is currently 6:04 p.m on Saturday the 25th. ” The sense of calm on Jonathan’s face disappeared. “I’ll go get your prescription medicines, you need more rest.”, said the nurse leaving the room. Jonathan unplugged the IV connected to his arm and grabbed his clothes. He bolted out the exit and onto the street. It was crucial for him to deliver the letter by midnight. He ran to the nearest car rental lot and jumped over the fence. He crept up behind an SUV and opened the door, luckily for him the door was unlocked. Jonathan knew how to hotwire a car due to his training at “work”. The vehicle sprung to life. He broke past the barriers at the exit and on he went onto the highway, he was determined, there was a fire in his eyes. Just then, he heard a police siren. A glance at the rear view mirror revealed that there was a patrol car on his tail. He decided to take advantage of the forest that the highway was approaching. He swerved onto the trail leading into the dense forest. The patrol car followed through. As the incline increased it became even more difficult for them to follow. Jonathan thought he was losing them until a bullet hit one of the windows almost injuring him, breaking shards of glass all over the seats. Jonathan was barely able to escape the police and return to the highway. Three hours later, he arrived at the meeting location to deliver the package. He looked around and saw no one in sight. Just then, he heard someone exclaim “Timothy!”. He took off his headset to learn it was time for bed.
