Technically, if we simply look at the definition of leadership, it is the quality an individual possesses to guide and lead a person or group. It is an important trait required to surpass in today's world. What does a leader possess? He possesses integrity, knowledge, common sense, logical thinking, wit, and responsibility. Is that all that leadership truly is? Do all these traits serve justice to the definition of leadership? No. Leadership is so much more. This is but a fraction of the necessities! Leadership is in fact the capacity to transform vision into reality.
Jim Kouzes, the famous American author and motivational speaker, says- “Leadership is not about titles, positions or work hours. It is about relationships.” This includes relationships with both others and one's own heart and mind. It is important for leaders to serve as an example for others as well as make themselves available and approachable to help their team. In connection with oneself, compassion, gratitude, time management, productivity, and courage are the principal features of leadership. A leader is someone who is not easily defeated by hardships or failures. These are the qualities that build up a person's character to make them a leader. In short, I feel that leadership is like a tower of blocks, if even one block (which represents the unique traits) is removed, the entire tower collapses.
People often use the phrase 'Born Leader', and according to me, there is no such thing. No one is born a leader. They develop into one through the support and guidance of parents, friends, teachers, and a mentor. Most importantly it is their own determination and will that keeps them on the path of definite glory. If a person sincerely deserves something and they work towards it wholeheartedly, the universe will aid them in all possible ways. Leadership is a process of self growth-including victories, defeats, successes and failures. Through this cycle, a person is shaped to earn the position of a leader.
It is important to keep in mind that a leader is never nearly perfect. Especially, as teenagers, we tend to make errors by getting influenced by our peers or procrastinating on a particular task. Unless a person does not climb out of such a situation, he cannot be termed a leader. A true leader will work hard with his team and his own instincts to get over this phase and follow the right path. It is not difficult to neglect one's choice, it is difficult to accept the fault, work upon it and use it to transform yourself into something bigger. Being in the position of a leader is a proud accomplishment and one most appreciated, especially if earned through hardship. Such a position is not given…it is earned.
